What is a Souk?
A souk (سوق) is a traditional open-air marketplace organized by trade and craft, each specialized quarter forming its own living workshop. The word derives from the Arabic root meaning "to drive": a reference to the caravans that once drove their animals and goods through these lanes. In Marrakech's Medina, the souks form an unbroken labyrinth stretching from Jemaa el-Fna to the Medersa Ben Youssef.
A City Within A City
The souks are not just a place to shop; they are the industrial and commercial heart of the old city. Here, the scent of cedarwood from the ébénistes blends with the sharp tang of leather from the tanneries and the heavy musk of the spice merchants.

Marrakech is home to one of the world's oldest and most complex souk networks. Founded in 1071 by the Almoravids, the Medina's 18 specialized souks stretch across 19 kilometers of covered lanes and open passageways, housing more than 40,000 artisans. Each souk occupies its own quarter, organized by trade, preserving a system of commercial organization that has functioned for nearly a thousand years.
