October 5 update: the museum space has now been officially inaugurated

The Institut français du Maroc has now confirmed that the permanent museum space at Maison Denise Masson was officially inaugurated on Saturday, October 3.

The inauguration was attended by France’s Ambassador to Morocco, Philippe Lalliot, the Director General of the Institut français du Maroc, Chloé Goupille, and the Director of the Institut français de Marrakech, Flora Boillot.

According to the Institut français, the new permanent space is dedicated to the life, work and intellectual legacy of Denise Masson, with a particular focus on her role in dialogue between France and Morocco and on questions of religion and intercultural exchange.

The official inauguration confirms that the museum space is now part of Maison Denise Masson’s permanent cultural offering rather than a temporary exhibition.

Marrakech has a new permanent museum space in the Medina. Maison Denise Masson, the historic 19th century riad near Bab Doukkala managed by the Institut français de Marrakech, inaugurated a permanent space on October 3 devoted to the life, work and intellectual legacy of Denise Masson.

The new museum expands the cultural role of a house already used for exhibitions, residencies and public events. The Institut français says the permanent presentation combines digital material with the different spaces of the riad and archival material connected to Masson’s work, including her French translation of the Quran.

Opening coverage published ahead of the inauguration described a wider display of manuscripts, correspondence, personal objects, paintings, old books and biographical material. Together, the collection is intended to trace Masson’s life in Morocco and her long engagement with intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

The opening also gives visitors another reason to stop in this part of the Medina beyond the better known monuments and shopping streets. Maison Denise Masson sits at 49 Derb Zemrane near Bab Doukkala, within walking distance of the northern Medina.

The house is currently also hosting the temporary exhibition Interreligiosités marocaines by Manoël Pénicaud. Institut français listings give visiting hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors should check the Maison Denise Masson or Institut français Marrakech listings before going in case exhibition access or admission conditions change.

For Marrakech visitors interested in architecture, cultural history and places that are quieter than the city’s headline attractions, the new permanent museum space adds a genuinely different Medina stop rather than another short term event.
